In Southeast Asia, the Lantau-Mekong River flew through six nations, China, Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam, sustaining over 90 ethnic groups along these banks. Past security challenges promoted these countries to join hands to safeguard their people's safety. Let's now connect with our reporter, Liu Shui.

Morning, Sean. I'm at Budo Pucho Vaso in Myanmar, where local residents have long been plagued by smuggler and insecurity. To address security challenges, China, Myanmar, Laos, Thailand established joint patrols and law enforcement mechanism. Up to November of 2025, they have conducted over 159 operations. We will analyze the success by using three key intercultural theories, contact hypothesis, acculturation theory, and culture hybridity. According to contact hypothesis, intergroup prejudice is reduced when groups are engaged in direct contact characterized by common goals, institutional support, and cooperative interaction. In our case, the common goal was to fight against smugglers and insecurity. The institutional support was established through the combined operations center.

From the smart farm, we could see this is where Chinese modern innovation meets Loisian traditional agriculture. They are paving the joint path forward. And secondly, it's a linguistic search space, whereas like Burmese papaw actually transcended its origins into a shared emblem of our two countries of the strong and emotional balance. And most profoundly, it's a cultural third space. The mutual aid and the similar food actually along the Lansamekong River let us share the identity of this Lansamekong consciousness.

So, the success of Lansamekong cooperation offers a clear three-step framework for enhancing intercultural communication. On a cognitive level, we must move beyond initial stereotypes. A breakthrough occurs when all party cognitively and consciously seeking commonalities, such as recognizing their shared rise from its civilization. Second, from the affective level, we need to move from basic respect to genuine empathy.

A vivid example is by a grateful Burmese grandmother's wish to see her papal rescuers in China. This also carries the shared value of rescuing life in shared adversity. On the behavioral level, it's a reactive cooperation and proactive sharing and economic co-creation, just like the joint patrols and the smart farms, this kind of project.
