And, contestant, you may start whenever you're ready. Welcome to the Global Women's Summit. I am proud to speak as a college student representative today. I will share a story of me teaching my grandma how to use WeChat today with you. When I was 15, my grandpa passed away, and that was when my grandma sunk into depression.
After seeing her terrible status, I decided to teach her how to use WeChat, a then newly developed cell phone app. But there was a problem. My grandma was illiterate. In other words, she did not recognize Chinese characters. So I decided to draw her some pictures and doodle on margins of paper to show how to use those WeChat functions and boxes.
Finally she grasped the keys to using WeChat. Since then she could send messages to family and friends and get connected with them. Now she participated in community social events and smiles lit up her face again. At the same time, WeChat itself surprised us with astonishments. It provided the service of voice input where she no longer needed to type into the PIN chat box and she could send direct messages just through voice. This experience showed me how the iteration of digitized technology could forge bonds between generations of Chinese people. Firstly, WeChat centralizes people's needs, returning the demands and requirements
by its people and adjusted its service and functions to better fit the needs of its users. Moreover, it respects the disadvantaged people in our society, not only my grandma who is illiterate but also some elderly people who had no access to digitized technologies before. More importantly, it forged this bond between the two generations of people who would otherwise not have been so closely knitted and connected.
I would be focusing on my study and work and ignore the lives and the status and the terrible depression my grandma was undergoing at that time. But now, we found and regained this long-lost love between generations and forged this kingship, this close kingship that would come for years. Thank you for listening.
