So ladies and gentlemen, good afternoon. Welcome to China Overlook, an eight-minute program on intercultural communication. Today our topic is about the digital acculturation.
We have the honor to invite two professors, Professor Yang and Professor Tao, to join us together. Welcome. Thank you for inviting us. So professors, from the video we can see that there are three clips, which are the manifestations from Chinese Slum Rap, Indian Seri Hip Hop, to Global Hip Hop Remix. So today, let's examine the cultural norms and practices behind it, and try to learn what lessons we can draw from it.
So professor now let delve into the first part that from the video we can see that the Chinese rap goes viral worldwide but different people have different comments some people have the negative comments so professor what do you think of it Okay thank you for your question I will analyze it from two different aspects according to Albert T. Hall's cultural iceberg theory the part floating above the water surface stands for the behaviors of the culture we can directly observe that's you say specific in our case the Chinese rap song we can directly spread forward to the overseas market.
And we can say many foreigners spread their negative attitude towards it. They say the music listening is very ugly and terrible. What I want to say is that they are not familiar with the Chinese intangible culture and they do not acknowledge what positive effect this Chinese intangible culture may bring about. where you can see some collectivism and friendship they can bring about to all other overseas friends.
And secondly, on the other hand, the inner grassroots core also plays an important role here. It's right the core deep within every listener's heart and within the cultural identity deep within. That's all. Thank you. Yeah, I think that our cultural identity theory is very suitable for this. And professor, what is your comments? And could you please give us some suggestions about... I actually sense a mixture of culture inside of the example here.
So first of all rap music is African American origin and it's kind of expressed by a Chinese artist. So it's very interesting. And for the good and bad comments I should say, this is very normal in the process of spreading culture and outputting our culture products.
And sure, we need to make good quality products. Good quality, yeah. So now, let's go to the next part. From the video, we can see that the Indian people have been confused about the traditional music and the global pop music. So, Professor, what do you think of the conflict between the globalizations and the traditions? Yes, I would analyze this both theoretically and practically. theoretically speaking, we have the four acculturation strategies, that is assimilation, separation, integration and marginalization.
We can see many young people in India, obviously they spread their ideas about the Indian culture moving forward into assimilation, which caused anxiety and debate on what attitude they might take towards the Chinese Indian culture and Western culture to avoid the westernization. So my suggestion is let's move our perspective from India to China.
With China's reform and opening up, many young people express their ideas about the fear that we might lose our traditional Chinese culture. My suggestion is according to Professor Fei Xiaotong, we must treasure our own culture and respect others' culture when both cultures are treasured and respected our world as a whole. Yeah, I think you are very right. So, Professor, what should we do to choose a different style?
First of all, I want to say it's very common to run into these situations. A country's people, they kind of resist another kind of culture and people hold their different opinions. But I think two cultures can always get along. It doesn't necessarily have to be the situation that each culture had to fight against each other. So I would say, let's assume Indian culture is culture A, and American Western culture is culture B.
Maybe they can integrate with each other and create a culture C. So maybe that's the best solution. Yeah, so now let's delve into the third part that from the video, we can see that BTS gains so many fans in the United States. So I wondered why K-pop can spread all over the world, professor? Yes, what impresses me most in the video is that one of the internet influencers Jackson Wong said we must embrace other cultures with an open mind and we must open ourselves to other cultures and be flexible to try other cultures So the widespread of K-pop can be explained from two aspects.
From the microscape scale, with the widespread of new media, that is to say, instead of using traditional media like newspapers and radio, we have some new media like short videos, smartphones, and the widespread of internet. With the widespread of the Internet, those Korean culture may spread forward into the American culture and causing some concerns about what attitude we should take towards the Korean culture.
Actually, we can say Americans are very happy and very glad to accept the other cultures, and they think something that is very interesting within the K-pop songs, and that impresses them a lot. And from the micro scale, we can see some Korean immigrants move forward into America. They brought the Korean culture deep within. And we can say Americans are very happy to accept it.
So this reminds me of one specific question, that whether immigrants' culture influences local culture depends on what attitude we should take towards them. And my suggestion is we should acknowledge the cultural differences and embrace them with respect. That's all. Thank you. I really like your analysis, like the macro and the micro. So, Professor, we can see that the BTS, the K-pop, has already set a successful example for us, for our own Chinese culture.
So could you please give us some suggestions to spread our own Chinese culture, like the Chinese pop, to all over the world? Yeah, I think there are a lot of things we can learn from the development and the spreading of hip-hop culture in Western society. First of all, I want to say that, just as Professor Yang just said, we have to make good use of new media, like show video platforms like TikTok, you know, maybe Xiaohongshu. And it's a very efficient way to explore our own culture.
and also the resources we have today is more than ever. So we have to be confident in our own culture in order to have this positive influence on others. Yeah, and thank you to professors today. And we're fortunate to receive the elaborate analysis on it. And we can see that the 5G algorithm has reduced cultural transfer to a single swap.
And for us, I think that we can be the speaker of our own Chinese culture and to spread it all over the world. So if you want to know more about intercultural communication, just stay tuned and see you next time. Thank you.
