Our case analysis is aimed on multicultural life. Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. In the video we just saw discussed how 5G and algorithm can play a role in today's intercultural communication. So the first case actually focused on the integration of Chinese culture and English social media. The second highlighted Indian culture and Western hip-hop music. The third demonstrated Western K-pop music and its development in Korea.
So we are going to use three key intercultural theories to analyze our case, culture hybridity, acculturation theory, and third culture individual. So firstly, we want to analyze this case with the culture hybridity theory, which is going to answer the question, how does Chinese digital agriculture take place? So the culture hybridity was argued by Said, saying that all cultures are intertwined in the hybrid.
Later Homi Bhabha sees the hybridization as a continuous and unfinished process of blending of the different cultures And based on this perspective he introduced the concept called third space In this case we could say actually the Chinese culture and also on Western social media is a perfect example of this third space. First of all, it's a linguistic third space. In the case, we could say, there's a Western girl post a post on social media, on a Chinese social media about the breakup with her boyfriend and meanwhile the comments from the Chinese audience is like you are swan and he's ugly don't cry you are pretty and this sort of thing so we could see actually swan is kind of like a really Chinese culture stuff because we have an old
saying is that which is saying that the girl is pretty yeah so this is a connotation from our Chinese culture and meanwhile we're using this combined with the English language and people post it online so we could see the words the connotations the slang and this grammars actually is an intertwined of the Chinese language or Chinese culture with English language and secondly it's a cultural third space how did this happen we could see the Chinese song going really viral and really popular.
It's called Da Zhan Hong Tu. Actually, this is really matched with the TikTok social media platform. Why so? Because TikTok is a really fast-paced, short video clip platform. In this case, we could see the song actually is going really viral. One time you hear it, you're going to remember it most of the time. So in this case, they're pushing humor and this kind of Chinese humor from our culture into a Western platform that actually gets understood by Western audience.
So we could see in this kind of culture hybridity background or context, how Chinese actually achieve this kind of digital acculturation is because they use a creative localization strategy. They are combining our cultures, Athens, to the Western cultures. And that's all from my part. Let's move on. Second, acculturation theory. John Barry proposed a two-dimensional question for all cultures, that is, whether they should engage with the new culture and whether to purvey their heritage culture.
He separated them into four dimensions, that is, the marginalization, separation, assimilation, and integration. Well, in the second case, we can see that some Indians are afraid that the Indian clothes and the Western hip-hop music is a process of over-Westernization. So they're actually afraid that this kind of assimilation, which is abandoning some of the original culture and adapting some of the new common culture, will cause the Indian culture's over-Westernization.
However, we believe that this trend of Indian dance and their clothes and the combination of high pop music is actually integration and can open a dialogue between Indian culture and Western culture. because it prefers the original culture of Indian clothes and musics, which represents their core value, while adding Western hip-hop musics into the original culture, which adds the diversity of the original culture.
And I think it is a perfect example of how intercultural communication can occur in the trend of today's globalization. And now, let's dive in deeper. In the third space created on the digital media, we can see all videos are so short, and it is adapted to the fast pace. Nowadays, we do things all really fast, and we can see all the key pop videos are so short, and sometimes it's being standardized, which means it is really easy to copy. Like, absolutely a layout man like me can get involved in such videos. So this somehow make the K-pop culture easy to access. Thus, the cultural distance has been narrowed.
Secondly from the perspective of third cultural individuals we can see the K culture actually derives in America However by the Korean they add into different cultural elements Growing up in America and Korea from both cultures they can combine different cultural elements and styles into K-pop. So that's why the K-pop can both fit Western style and Eastern style.
So at the same time, we can see since the elements are combined, so more and more audiences can get involved. So this can somehow help us to create a shared pop culture. It is no longer a culture that belongs to one nation, but it is a culture that belongs to Generation Z, so Generation Z can all get involved. And thirdly, it is the concept of the localization.
We can see the spread of the K-pop has taken the localization strategy in this globalized way. We can see that in American, we can adopt American style of K-pop, and in Western culture, we can have our own styles. There's no one stereotype, there's no one limit to say that how the K-pop should be like, but we can all enjoy the K-pop in our own self.
It allows personal expression, and which is prominent in this digital world. So we can see this case actually provides us a clear three-step model for cultural expression and intercultural communication. First, on the cognitive level, we need to be open-minded. We not only need to recognize the difference, but also to see the similarities, like the Generation Z all get involved in the fast-paced videos.
Second, from the faculty level, we need to get more involved in engagement. We need to move from basic respect to empathy. Like Generation Z can not only respect the K-pop culture, but using K-pop to express their feelings, which make us resonate. Second and thirdly, on the behavior level, we need to open more space like digital environment. Like think about it, from TikTok refugee, many Generation Zs are allowed to have a conversation in the platform like Xiaohongshu.
So this kind of action can help in Generation Z express their feelings and have intercultural communication that's promoting mutual understanding and creates a culture that's truly shared. Thank you.
