The quote is quite easy. We have two ears, which means we need to understand and recognize different culture. And we have only one mouth. That is to say, we need to act in ourselves less, however, listen to others more. However, I have another perspective. It is we listen to the voice from both sides. Well, expression, we express it in our own style.
This can be explained by the motto proposed by John Barry. He proposed two-dimensional culturation theory. He posed that all individuals face two questions. Maintain their heritage culture or engage with the host culture. Thus, he divided into four strategies. Acculturation, separation, marginalization, and integration.
So I think the quote actually delivers the strategy of integration. We have one ear listening to others, and we have another ear sustaining our own values. Then we have mouth. We have mouth to express our own understanding, not only based on our own culture, however, taking the advantage of other cultures. World Premier Zhou Enlai once proposed qiutong cunyi, which means finding the common ground while seeking for diversities.
