So firstly, I would like to explain how stereotypes or prejudice occur. It is called the iceberg theory. So many people, they compare a culture to an iceberg.

There's only 10% of the iceberg which is above the surface and visible, such as the language, the behaviors of the people, their customs, and our common impression towards them. However, 90% of the culture is hidden behind the surface, which is invisible. And it takes immersive and real-life experience in order to understand the majority of the culture. So many people, when they don't have enough access towards a certain culture, they usually just, they are not aware of their stereotypes and prejudice.

They only view this culture by the 10% of it that they can see directly. Taking myself as a personal example, I've not been in Shanghai common. This is my second time, and my first time is many years ago. So I kind of have the stereotype that Shanghai people, they are kind of not friendly to non-local Shanghainese. And recently, there's a term that went viral on the internet called Shanghai Fuli Ren, which means that many people think that some coffee shop owners in Shanghai, they're being arrogant and unfriendly to customers.

However, when I actually come here in Shanghai and walk into those coffee shops and get in contact with the local people, I'm aware that these are only stereotypes and prejudice and my assumption. I come to understand the mentality of the Shanghai people in a more comprehensive and objective level. So, in conclusion, in order to fully understand the culture, we should not directly treat them with our stereotypes, prejudice and misunderstandings.

We should actually have a real-life contact into them and be aware that different cultures may have different values and different visions towards the world, and there isn't a right or wrong between them.
